Fire Cider Tonic

Fall is here!
The change of season brings fall illnesses! One of the reasons this time of year we tend to get sick more often is we start to spend more time in close proximity to each other and we are inside more.
During back to school this is especially true for our children. They are back in class and often back amongst their peers in classrooms.
Another thing to consider is we are back to routine and our schedules are busier which means we are more tired and likely not prioritizing our sleep.
Sleep is extremely restorative and healing. We need adequate sleep so that our body can fight off infection and heal. Our immune system gets suppressed when we eat processed foods, and too much sugar too. So make sure you do what you can to combat illness!
Get enough sleep. Move your body. Eat seasonal foods. Drink water! You can even prioritize immune boosting foods and tonics. Like this Fire Cider.
Fire cider is a tonic thats been around since the 70's! Have you heard of it? Or maybe you have even tried it!
If you are wondering what the heck it is let me tell you!
Fire cider is a blend of veggies, herbs and spices that are supposed to help prevent and reduce symptoms of cold and flu! The base is Apple Cider vinegar so its liked an amped up elixir! This tonic boasts major anti inflammatory benefits!
This recipe will make two 12 oz mason jars full. I opted for 1 large jar.
- 3 fresh jalapeños – including seeds, chopped
- 5 cloves fresh garlic
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 4 tbsp fresh ginger root-diced
- small handful each of fresh rosemary, thyme and oregano
- Organic apple cider vinegar- enough to fill jar and cover ingredients
- 1/2 lemon squeezed in each jar or a full lemon if using one jar
Place all ingredients in a sterilized jar and cover with a square of parchment or wax paper. Cap jar and store in a cool dry place for 4-6 weeks.
Shake or stir the jar daily. When fermented after the 4-6 weeks, strain, add raw local honey to taste and store in the refrigerator.
Take 1-3 tablespoons daily, depending on needs. It can be added to water or any other food or beverage as well.
*Optional- add in 1 tsp of horseradish root
